Dune + Lord of the Rings = Eragon
I AM SO DISILLUSIONED WITH ERAGON
I read Eragon after LotR at like age 12 and thought, "Oh elves, dwarves, orcs, dragons, whatever. I still like this. Riding dragons is cool." and "People say it's bad writing but if it is, I'm not bothered by it." and "He ripped off Star Wars? well, I haven't watched that"
But now I'm reading Dune (written almost 50 years ago by Frank Herbert) and I'm like, "Well Paolini, Herbert has got riding giant worm monsters, and it sounds a lot like riding dragons."
Elva in the Inheritance cycle is like identical to Herbert's Alia.
I am annoyed.
But *Dune*, people. It's sci-fi, not fantasy, but it's like LotR in that staggering way, how the world is so rounded it's entirely plausible that it exists. I mean, it obviously doesn't exist *here*, yet it has to exist, because it's so real!
And anyone read the Hunger Games? You know the "feels-level: Harry-Potter-Always" moment, where Katniss says "Stay with me" and Peeta says "Always"?
It. Was. Literally. In. Dune. So now I'm disillusioned with Mockingjay, too.
Oh and I read the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson which is very good/very creepy- if you liked the Hunger Games, you should read it.

EXHAUSTIVE EXPLANATION OF 8 FANDOM MASH
Sharpie on sketchbook paper. This is what I am most proud of.
There are 8 symbols of 8 book series; if you've read all of them then you are AWESOME.
Formation is my own design; each symbol is owned by their respective authors.
base bird form: Mockingjay from the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
circular border ring: One Ring from Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
blue trident: trident for Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan
red flames: Dauntless seal flames from Divergent by Veronica Roth
green triangle, circle, & line: Deathly Hallows from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
green eye: little green running guy from the target symbol on the Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz
black diamond/fish on end of trident: Angelic Power rune from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
UNOFFICIAL (sorry if you couldn't get it): black symbol before the 1 on the end: Yawë symbol from the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini
(these are all awesome series and you should read them all)(also Artemis Fowl and Ender's Game)
I got the inspiration for morphing fandom symbols from thinking about how Dauntless flames were the same shape as the Mockingjay's upper wing. Then if I combined Divergent and Hunger Games, a trident would be a perfect substitute for the arrow. Then I started thinking about the symbols for major series, and how many would fit into the Mockingjay design. The LotR ring was the next obvious choice. Harry Potter could in no way be left out, and The Deathly Hallows was the best symbol. I originally intended it to go in the eye, as the most recognizable symbol in the smallest, hardest to see position, but the triangle looked weird and it ended up fitting better in the triangle of the tail. There was still 2 spots on the fletching on the arrow, and the eye was such a focal point it had to be something. I had originally wanted to have Artemis Fowl and Ender's Game, as I love both series. But neither have good recognizable symbols, so I picked TMI because it fit for an arrow fletching, and Alex Rider, because the target symbol fit for the eye.

Finally, for Eragon, I chose an unofficial symbol. About a year ago I'd seen Christopher Paolini's drawing of the ring Aren with the Yawë on it. (the Yawë is also the tattoo on Arya's shoulder) I liked it, learned it, and doodled it everywhere, so I mentally thought of it as the Eragon symbol. There's been so much confusion over those last 2 I wish I'd done something different.
Drawing it, I started off with a super-light pencil sketch of the position of each symbol, erasing quite a lot as I moved them around. When I was sure of each position, I added color using ultra-fine-point Sharpies for detail and fine-point for broader color. I directly referenced all of the symbols' art for accuracy.

If you'd like more Mockingjay art, I sketched minimalistic ones and posted to G+ and Tumblr:

To start this here are some basic things about me- I'm homeschooled, I'm an actress in Thin Ice Theater, I like trees, and novels and crafting are my main hobbies.
peanut-butter jar of fine-point sharpies, pickle jar of ultra-fine-point sharpies, brush-tip sharpie, fine-point sharpie, ultra fine-point sharpie, eraser, regular #2 pencil, mechanical pencil (there was a chisel-tip sharpie but it died and I haven't gotten another)
